A wave of arrests were made following a targeted hacking of EncroChat devices. A collaboration between UK, Irish and European Police agencies resulted in a “significant,” number of arrests being made, the seizure of 15 phones using EncroChat software and £360,000 in cash, in what has been described as the “largest and most significant enforcement operation,” mounted by UK police in response to organized crime groups. It was an unprecedented move made, showing the extent to which law enforcement is attempting to crackdown on suspects in the drugs trade. The hacking of EncroChat software, likened to being the ‘electronic equivalent’ of two people talking alone in a room’ was compromised by a complex and targeted attack, broadly intending to disrupt organized crime, but compromising the security of all its users in the process.
